Document Y is the edited version of X that you intend to save/save as.
Save = save all changes made to the document X itself. Document X is deleted and replaced by Y. There's no way that you get back the original information of X.

The "Save As" option indicates that - whatever the user expects to do with the currently opened format - there is another place or way in which the application or document needs to be available. It is a good idea to combine both options - by regularly using the "Save" option - when the final product will be stored elsewhere through the "Save As" option.
