The Save option differs from Save As in that it saves the document with its default title and at the default location. On the other hand, the Save As option allows one to change the location and title of a document.

∙ 11y agoDocument X is your original/unedited document.
Document Y is the edited version of X that you intend to save/save as.
Save = save all changes made to the document X itself. Document X is deleted and replaced by Y. There's no way that you get back the original information of X.
Save As = Document Y is saved as a different copy and document X is kept. The you will have both document X and Y in your computer and you can revert back to the changes made to document X.

Specifically, the "Save" option amounts to making sure that changes are permanent as the user goes through the currently opened format and that they are not lost if the computer crashes or malfunctions. The "Save As" option indicates that - whatever the user expects to do with the currently opened format - there is another place or way in which the application or document needs to be available. It is a good idea to combine both options - by regularly using the "Save" option - when the final product will be stored elsewhere through the "Save As" option.
