The preposition "of" usually provides a specification for a part or attribute (number of people, best of the class, control of the country, rule of law, center of the building), a cause (died of smallpox), or composition (block of wood). It has also been used to indicate time references (of the recent past, of days gone by).

Also:

Of is the most common preposition in English. Usually it makes a link between two nouns or noun phrases eg a friend of mine, the Queen of England.

Of has many different meanings some of them are:

Of often means possession -- the owner of the dog

Of is used to link a member to its group -- the oldest of the three boys. a member of the band.

Of follows nouns referring to containers or units -- a bag of peanuts, a litre of milk.
