The indefinite article "a" or "an" is used to indicate one unit, type, or individual of a group, rather than any specific one. (e.g. a man rather than the man)

Once an indefinite subject is used, further references to that same subject use the definite article.

Example:

"I saw a man by the tree. The man was very tall." (that man)

"I decided to buy a car, and the car that I bought was blue." (that car)
