∙ 9y agoPony is only interested in hanging out with Dallas Winston because he is close to his best friend, Johnny Cade. Dally was very proud of the violence he had done in the past and was definitely who he wanted to stand by in a rumble. Pony vigorously disagreed with Johnny Cade's assessment of Dally which likened him to the southern aristocrats in "Gone with the Wind"

For one thing Pony has two brothers that love and care for him, Dally does not have that because he does not have any siblings that we know of. Another reason is that Pony also had parents that loved him unlike Dally, who we get the impression do not care or love him. A third reason is that Pony is smart and athletic like his brothers. Dally's view of Pony at the beginning of the novel did was that he was a young, and not at all tough. Dally then experiences Ponyboy change in to a tough and brave greaser. This is shown as Pony describes Dally as someone who he 'didn't like him, but he was smart and you had to respect him.' This implies that Dally knew he didn't like him and that Pony was scared of him this also implies that Dally doesn't like him back because he is the weak member of the gang who doesn't like to break the law. But then he changes into a tough member of the group when there is a fire in both the book and the movie Johnny and Pony run in and save the kids and Dallas gets angry with Johnny for doing this and this is because he wouldn't have done it even though he is meant to be the brave greaser instead Johnny and Ponyboy did and they're meant to be the weak ones of the group this shows a drastic change in Ponyboy.

The church was on fire and little kids were trapped inside and pony boy and johnny went in to get them then once all of the kids were out johnny threw out pony boy and dally hit pony on the back and he dropped like he was dead and then dally went in to save johnny who got hit in the back with a bunning piece of wood that came down from the church roof and then dally burnet his arm and all three of them went to the hospital and Tim sheperd was in the ambulance with ponyboy.

well, when Dally punches him in the face it all became clear. the socs were "scums" and the greasers were better because they stuck together. after he relizes this, he wants to go onto the soc side during the "brawl"
