Johnny and ponyboy differ from dally because johnny and ponyboy aren't "tuff" like dally is. Dally has a mean and rough look to him unlike pony and johnny, and dally's eyes show that he has seeen things no other person has.

∙ 13y agoFor one thing Pony has two brothers that love and care for him, Dally does not have that because he does not have any siblings that we know of. Another reason is that Pony also had parents that loved him unlike Dally, who we get the impression do not care or love him. A third reason is that Pony is smart and athletic like his brothers. Dally is smart, but also at the same time he is not.

Yet, Ponyboy does not realize Darry's love for him; Darry is cruel to Ponyboy because he realizes Ponyboy's talents and wants him to succeed in life. But Ponyboy takes this as "Darry hates me". This creates a collosus family chasm between Ponyboy and Darry.
