yes, an alligator will remain passive "sleep like" for a while after being placed on its back -- rubbing the belly may or may not help the process. I presume it is part of a nervous system kink in the cerebellum that stops movement for a short period. I've seen it done at the Ross Allen Institute in Silver Springs, Florida.
