Strangulation occurs when a loop of the intestine is cut off from its blood supply. Strangulation occurs in about 25% of cases of small bowel obstruction. It is a serious condition that can progress to gangrene within six hours.

What body damage can a ligature do?

A ligature is also known as garroting. It is the strangulation using a rope, cord, wire, or even shoe laces. The strangulation can take place either partially or completely circumferencing the neck.

Does manual strangulation with a rope cause brain damage if so how?

Manual strangulation deprives the brain of oxygen; so while the process itself may not cause a lot of physical damage, preventing oxygenated blood to the brain will result in brain damage or death. Manual strangulation often results in damage to or breaking of the hyoid bone in the neck.
