Look low in the western sky just after sunset; the Moon you will see there will be a waxing crescent moon. The prettiest phase of the Moon, in my personal opinion, is the 1 or 2 day old crescent sometimes called "Diana's Bow".
The moon appears crescent shaped during roughly the week following a New Moon,
and also during roughly the week preceding a New Moon.
So the answer is: The moon appear crescent shaped for roughly half of every month.
You'll see a crescent moon in the last week before "New Moon", and the first week after it.
In general, there's no way to say what will appear in the sky close to the moon. That depends on
the date and the motions of the planets.
This doesn't mean that it can't be predicted. It can be predicted very accurately, but you have to name the date
you're interested in first.
The moon appears as a waning crescent during the last quarter of its cycle of phases ...
during the 7 or 8 days before New Moon. During that time, it rises in the east during the
last few hours before sunrise.
You see a crescent moon during one week before and one week after a New Moon.
After one new moon, the crescent is growing, from nothing to half-illuminated.
Leading up to the next new moon, the crescent is shrinking, from half-illuminated down to nothing.
The waxing crescent moon reaches its highest altitude in May. Since it follows the
sun closely, it appears highest in the sky between noon and sunset, depending on
how much of the crescent that is illuminated. It appears lowest in the sky in November.
The moon appears as a crescent shape whenever it's seen during
the week before and the week after a New Moon.
The moon appears in a crescent phase within 7.4 days either side of New Moon.
During the first 7.3 days following the New Moon.
Just after sunset during the first week after New Moon.
Crescent or gibbous; any phase except full or new.
You can see the moon there for half a month when the moon is crescent. Yes, the moon can be visible in Antarctica when it is at it's zenith from a location in the southern hemisphere.
It means that a day or two or three have elapsed since the New Moon. And not only that ! The first appearance of the crescent moon is steeped in even moredeep significance: If you can see the first crescent, it means that the sky is clear.
Crescent.
The moon has different phases based on which portion of the moon is being lit by the sun. A crescent moons refers to the phase when we see the least lit portion of the moon. However, there are two gibbous': waxing and waning. The portion of the moon we see lit is cyclic, every week or so, we either see the an increase in the portion of the moon we see lit, waxing gibbous, or a decrease in the portion we see lit, waning. So, the waxing and waning gibbous phase refers to the time in the moon's orbit when we see most of the moon lit, about 3/4's, and in a crescent, we only see about 1/4 of the moon lit.
HORNSThe crescent moon end is called the Horn. It's all part of the Moon; the crescent ends are the last lit-up area of the moon. At the crescent, most of the illuminated area of the moon is the other side of the Moon, facing away. The remainder of the side of the Moon that we can see is dark.
We see a crescent moon.

A crescent.

The crescent phase.
When you observe a crescent moon it is because only that crescent portion of the moon is illuminated by the sun from your particular perspective, here on Earth. If we were looking at the moon from a different angle in space, we would see different parts of the moon illuminated by the sun.
By the sunlight reflected off the Moon's surface and the position of the Moon on its orbit.
Crescent moon waxing (new moon).
The crescent moon is no different than the regular moon itself. It is just a phase. The reason we see it this way is because a moon year and a moon day is the same number of earth hours, so we see the same side of the moon year around.
You would have to wait until after the moon is full. Then, the moon is in its waning phase and you can see it!
