The Middle of the election they have limited clearance and it builds at each stage of the election until one is named the future President and given access to the Country's secrets. While on campaign to become the President, Nominee's supply their own protection until they become a Democratic or Republican Candidate. At which point they gain a higher level of clearance, but not access to everything, the Dem. or Rep. parties, as well as private security, protect their candidates. Once elected President of the United States in November they fall under the protection of the Secret Service in Public, and gain clearance to as much as they need to get a foothold on a plan of action once President, but Private security on their own. Once upon the stage on January 20th to take the Oath of The Office of The President of The United States, it is at that moment when they become President that they can finally go about whatever changes to protection, the economy, or Govt. policy.
