When filling up your gas tank why would it register as full right away when it is only half full?

Fuel tank gauges are rarely accurate. It is best to use your trip odometer and monitor your mileage to determine actual gas quantity. Ron: Many cars/trucks use thermal gauges for indicating gas, temperature and oil levels...which means...as the current thru the gauge varies (changed by the sensor) it warms up a heater element (wrapped around a "bimetal" strip). The bimetal strip bends as it heats up and moves the "needle" in the gauge. The more the current, the hotter the element, the higher the gauge goes. Unfortuantly, this process is a slow one, so, to bring the guages up to temperature quickly, the dashboard power has a "voltage regulator" which applys a maximum current (for a few seconds) to the dashboard gauges when you first start a vehicle. After that, it pulses the gauges every second or so. The regulator usually has some "adjustment" to the timing pulse so you can adjust for the "high point" of all of gauges. So, if you fill up your car while it is running, the gauge wont change as fast as you fill it up and it may show less than full (more so in colder weather)...or you could have a bad gauge, sender, wire, ground or voltage regulator.
