This will depend on what type of fish you decide to buy. If you want to start with something fairly inexpensive and easier to keep, I would recommend starting with a betta as you can buy inexpensive ready made kits for them.
In addition, make sure you get food, water conditioner, and a thermometer so you can monitor the water temperature, and make sure that when you clean the tank/bowl, the new water is the same temperature as the old water before adding your betta back into the tank.
You Have To buy the angler armor and then the first fish should be the johnnyfish
When checking the quality of fresh fish, you should always first look at their flesh and their eyes. The flesh should be firm, free from slime, and spring to the touch. The eyes should be clear, never cloudy, almost as if the fish is still alive. The person selling the fish should always let you smell the fish, as well. The fish should not have an off-odor, it should smell like the ocean, never musty or sour. In following these steps, you can insure that when you cook the fish, you won't have to worry about getting sick, or risk getting sick (if cooked properly). And overall, the taste of the product will be a lot better. When the fish are soft to the touch, have cloudy eyes, or are covered in slime this means they have been out of the water too long, and have stared to go bad---these are basically the first steps in decomposition.

To clarify. when you buy a fish it is put in a bag. When you get an amphibian you get a little cup/tub. What do they provide when you get a pet bird? or should I buy a smaller cage for transport?
