  • The first way to try getting any object out of a child's obstructed airway is by holding their arms straight up as high as they will go (without hurting them) which loosens the airways. If the child is 12 and under and giving an abdominal thrust do not do so as one would do on an adult or it could cause injuries to the child. Your fist should be under the rib cage in the middle where that small hollow is and then gently thrust. The Heimlich maneuver is also a good way to get any object out of the airway of a child, but this too should be done gently. One swift thrust, but not too strong a thrust. If after one or two minutes and the airway is not being cleared immediately call emergency services.
