When a person is said to go the extra mile, it is in reference to doing or working more than what is required. Going the extra mile in life is often the source of great rewards, and makes a person feel good about what they are doing.

∙ 9y agoAn example of when you went the extra mile could be when you promised you would call a customer back with a resolution and you did. Maybe you worked overtime to satisfy a customer or ordered something from a different store. Use examples of when you did what wasn't in your job description to satisfy a customer.

∙ 9y agoMaking a call to locate the special dress and then driving to the other store to pick it up is an example of going the extra mile for a customer. Anytime you do something that makes it easier on the customer and isn't part of your "job description" you go the extra mile.

One way that you may have helped a customer in a difficult situation is to calm a customer who was upset. You may have also helped a customer to make up his mind about something. Or you could have helped a customer put together and outfit for a very special occasion.

What is the origin of Going the Extra mile?
The origin takes place during the "Sermon on the Mount" in Matthew 5:41 where it states, "If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles." Most interpret this to have meant that by carrying further (e.g.: an extra mile) he was doing more than what was being asked of him and thus, would be blessed for "Going The Extra Mile", teaching the listeners that by doing more than what one is asked, one is blessed or gains favor. Even though this is the origin, it is a common misinterpretation of the scripture. In context, Jesus was teaching to Jewish peasants whom were living in a time of great injustice to the Jewish people. The example in this verse of "going the extra mile" was in regards to the Roman Impressment Law. Under this law if a Roman Soldier passed you he could tell you to come carry his pack for up to one mile. By law you forced to go with him, however he could not force you to go further. By Jesus teaching to go another mile with him, it was a way of creatively exposing the injustice that was happening. Simply put, at the end of the mile when the soldier asks for his pack back, simply say, "it's ok, I'm good" and keep walking. Eventually this soldier would be pleading with you to get the pack back or else he may get in trouble. When he commanded you to carry his pack he was doing it as a superior; now he's pleading for back.

Oftentimes, employees will go above and beyond to help their customers.. If a potential employer asks a person about their experience going above and beyond, they should answer honestly with real life examples. .
How does a business add value?
IN any business contact with its "customer" you have the ability to give exactly what the customer pays for or to give that little extra. This might be be way of giving extra products for the same money, provide services like deliveries for no cost, being able to deliver good or services in an emergancy for the customer when the lead time is far beyond this time normally. Business just providing service above and beyond what the norm is still adding value.
