Not mattering where the land was or who inhabited the land, he along with Spain were after riches specifically gold. Their land was rich in gold and this attracted him to it.
When Hernan Cortes invaded Tenochtitlan and the Aztec empire, the Aztecs were being ruled by Moctezuma II. Moctezuma was a very religious men so he thought that Cortes was the god Quetzalcoatl coming back to his land. Before the Spanish conquistador came to Mexico, about 9 omens (weird signs or things that happened that meant that a big change was coming) appeared, so Moctezuma thought that those omens meant that Quetzalcoatl was coming back. Later Hernan Cortes used this as an advantage to conquer the Aztec empire.
There is no historical evidence to support the claim that Montezuma and the Aztecs believed Cortes was an ancient Aztec god. In fact, Montezuma initially believed Cortes to be a mortal ruler from a distant land. As their interactions continued, Montezuma did show reverence towards Cortes, but this was likely due to various political and strategic motivations rather than a belief in his divinity.
they conquerd a s load of land
A lot
The Aztecs didn't attack Cortes and his men at first because they did think that he was a god. But after Cortes captured the priest or leader, he masacured many Aztecs and conquered their land.

Cortes first landed on the coast of Yucatan.
Hernando Cortes explored Mexico. Particularly the Mexican Plateau, where the land is flat, and there are many minerals. This was also the land inhabited by the Aztecs, the indigenous people of Central Mexico. The Aztecs had a huge empire that was very complex for the time. People paid "taxes" to the "government" in return for many benefits of being part of the Aztec empire, such as going to school. The Aztecs had a very large army with spears and big sticks they used a clubs, and Hernando Cortes had only one or two hundred men with him, and defeated the mighty Aztecs because his men had swords and guns, which are much more effective. There are many long-term effects of this, and they are that they speak Spanish in Mexico, and their religion is mainly Roman Catholic. If Hernando Cortes had not conquered the Aztecs, people in Mexico would probably speak the Nahuatl language, the language of the Aztecs, and the people would be the religion of the Aztecs, but I am not sure what that is called.
Hernan Cortes first landed in Yacatan in the 1800s
Hernan Cortes landed in the land of the Aztecs in the early 16th century. His reign of terror would lead to the destruction of the empire.
He took over the Aztec empire, because the Aztecs thought he was a god when he came onto their land. They gave him good food, but then Hernando Cortes still captured and killed them.
