The South had remained an agricultural economy area of the US, however, in time, both during and after the Civil War, the main cash crop for the US and the South, namely cotton was being grown in other parts of the world. Tobacco did remain as a good money maker, however. With that said, when industries such as various types of manufacturing ones were introduced to the South it was simply called "industrialization".
