ventilation in your attic is very important. If you don't use ridge vent, you should use some type of roof vent placed close to the peak. I live in Minnesota which has a long heating season. You can never totally insulate your ceiling to allow no heat loss. This escaping heat ( however small it may be) can cause ice damming on your roof which may lead to leaks. Also, the warmer air allows for condensation to form in your rafters or trusses which may lead to a mold problem.
Furthermore, I'm sure you're aware that heat rises. In the summertime when the ambient temperature and heat from the sun beat on your roof, without ventilation, there is nowhere for this heat to escape. This added heat can "bake" your shingles, causing them to become brittle and suck the life out of them. I have " opened " a non-ventilated roof near the peak in July. It was like opening an oven door. As a former contractor, I can honestly say that I HATE roofing and any steps I could take to avoid re-roofing my home any sooner than neccissary, would surely grab my attention. In my opinion, adequate roof ventilation is one of these steps. I also think ridge vent Is alot more appealing to the eye. (curb appeal)
