so that when there is a fire in their house or something and people are unaware of it....the smoke will start the alarm and then the person will do something about it...it basically lets them know that there is a fire.

∙ 11y agoA smoke alarm is required by fire and life-safety codes when there is a risk of death to human life from possibly undetected smoke or fire.
Many states have fire codes that require smoke detectors on each level of an occupied dwelling or other residential habitation, if not actually in each separate sleeping area.
A smoke alarm is actually USED when it detects smoke, triggers the alarm, and hopefully alerts everyone to get out quickly.
Unfortunately, a huge percentage of smoke alarms will NEVER work because they have been improperly installed, have dead batteries, or have had the batteries removed and not replaced. There is really no excuse for people dying because of a missing two-dollar battery.
