Dogs tend to mate whenever an intact male can find a female in heat.
They mate when they want to.
When they are brought together for breeding purposes.
I have been breading dogs for 7 years and you can only breed them when they are in heat (their period). The first heat you want to skip because the dog is not 100% mature. The second heat is the best. The ages that are good for mating are 2-5. You also do not want them to breed everytime they are in heat because their uterous will stick to the skin and they cannot push the puppy out. And the dogs muscules will be streatched out. Dogs are typically in season for about three weeks. During the first week females have a bloody discharge and are not receptive to males. During the second the discharge lessens and the female indicates her interest in males. During the third she is again not receptive to males though she is still very attractive to them.
There are two aspects to this question, viz., climatic and biologically.
The climate encouraging mating of dogs, is the rainy season in tropical countries, and spring in teperate areas.
Biologically, the bitch comes in heat every 3 months (if she does not get pregnant), This is the trigger for mating.
There is no set breeding season for domestic dogs, it is dependent on the oestrous cycle of the bitch you are considering mating. She should come in to 'heat', usually twice a year but this is not determined seasonally. On the first day of the cycle spots of dark blood will drip occasionally from the vagina (spotting), the breeder should keep an eye out for this as it will give you a starting date to plan the mating date. Although the bitch could potentially be receptive for up to 22 days from spotting, usually 10 - 14 days is the optimum period so this is when the stud should be arranged. Ultimately the bitch will not stand for the stud until she is ready, look out for her putting her tail to one side when she is in the presence of dogs.
At a young age female does have sexual play all the time, being juvenile. However as they mature, and grow out of these sexual habits, they only come into heat, as they call it, twice a year.
A female dog usually should become ready to mate when she turns around a year old.
It is best to breed your female dog when she is in heat. That way the male is sexually attracted and wants to have a little 'fun'. ;)
a dog has there first cycle on there own. after there first cycle they have another one every six months until you breed them then it keeps going on until they get breed again
Just a few days after shes done bleeding.
