Earth's perihelion happens around January 3 each year.
Planets orbit stars in elipses, or elliptical orbits, which means their orbit around the star is an oval shape, as opposed to a circle. That means that at one point they will be closest to the star, and at another point they will be the farthest. Perihelion is when the planet is closest to the star, so the perihelion date is the date of which the planet is closest to the star.
Ellipse.
There are two things that cause it which are the earths orbit and thetilt of the earths axis.
Orbiting bodies travel faster at the closest point of approach to the primary. Planets and comets travel fastest at perihelion, the closest point of approach to the Sun. With comets, it's really obvious; Halley's Comet, for example, orbits between close the Venus to beyond Neptune. In its 76-year orbit, it spends about 3 years inside the orbit of Jupiter, and 73 years beyond it. Same with Earth and the other planets, although the eccentricity of Earth's orbit is only about 3%. So the difference between "fast at perihelion" and "slow at aphelion" isn't very much. The Earth reaches perihelion in January, so that's when it is moving fastest. If the people in Australia wanted to brag about how their summers are hotter than ours in the Northern Hemisphere because they're closer to the Sun during their summer, they would have a very good point!
Tangent to orbit, north away, tangent to orbit, south away.
Aphelion, which basically means "closest to the sun" in Greek.
perihelion is the point in a planets orbit when it is closest to the sun
The closest point to the Sun in a planet's orbit is called perihelion. The furthest point is called aphelion. Phil
The perihelion is the closest point to the Sun in the orbit of a planet. It is different for each planet based on the elliptical variation, but will always occur at the same point in each orbit.
Closest point is called the perihelion; furthest from sun is aphelion.
This is the Perihelion.
Perihelion = The point in a body's orbit closest to the sun Aphelion = The point in a body's orbit furthest from the sun
That's the point in Earth's orbit called "perihelion".The point in the orbit that's farthest from the sun is "aphelion".
perihelion
Perhillion is the the point of orbit where a planet is closest to the sun
perihelion
At the point when it is closest to the sun.
