Why may a person need to have a limb amputated?

The pain or feeling is known as "Phantom Pain" and is commonly reported by amputees. It's believed to be related to our body's electrical field - under Kirlian photography, plants that have had their leaves severed still show the outline of its bioelectric field after the piece has been cut and removed. Though the mechanism isn't fully understood, the pain signals to the brain from a severed limb or other injury are known to continue well after the area has apparently healed. Some theories believe that the nerve being severed causes an overload in the electric signals to the brain, which continue to be sent by the nerve path to the brain after the limb is gone. Since the nerve pain originated in the limb, the brain signals make it seem like the pain is actually coming from the limb when in fact it's not.
