the spring equinox is in spring.
Australia has never recognised 22 September as the start of Spring. Australia has always recognised Spring as beginning at the start of September rather than from the Vernal equinox.
Spring equinox occurs around March 20 and Fall equinox occurs around September 22 for the Northern Hemisphere. For the Southern Hemisphere these dates are opposite; the Spring equinox is around September 22 and the Fall equinox occurs around March 20.
The vernal equinox is also known as the spring equinox.
Not just Australia, the whole of the Southern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, the Winter Solstice is on the 21st of June, the Summer Solstice is on the 21st of December. The Spring Equinox is on the 21st of September, and the Autumn Equinox is on the 21st of March. Therefore, Spring commences on the 1st of September in the whole of the Southern Hemisphere. Unfortunately, because the earth is viewed inaccurately from a Northern Hemisphere perspective, the Southern Spring Equinox is actually referred to as the "Autumnal Equinox" so that it does not confuse the northerners.
The first day of spring is the Spring Equinox. The date of the Spring Equinox is the 21st of March of every year.
Australia simply has its official start of Spring on 1 September every year. In Australia and New Zealand, the seasons officially start on the first day of set months.
The word is "equinoctial" = equal day and night. It occurs twice a year, on the first day of Spring, and the first day of Autumn.
The March equinox will occur at 11:44 (am) at Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) on March 20, 2009.
An Equinox is when the Sun is directly above the Earth's equator. The Vernal or Spring Equinox in 2009 will be Friday March 20 at 7:44 am EDT (11:44 am Universal Time). (Note: this is the Fall or Autumnal Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere)
