It will be a while.
As of 2012 the US Army is going to buy around 140,000 M4A1 rifles from Colt Defense and Remington. These weapons will then be fitted with upgrade kits (supplier unknown) that will include a Gas Piston System or a new Direct Gas Impingement System , a new free floating rail system, and a free floating barrel.
While that is happening the US Army is running the Individual Carbine Competition witch is expected to conclude sometime between 2013 and 2014. If the winner of the competition shows a measurable improvement over the current M4, three companies will be contracted to build the new weapons which will be given to front-line troops. All other troops will receive the improved M4.
If there is minimal improvement, front-line troops will be given the improved M4 and all other troops will receive the current m4.
The M4 has been in use by the US Army since before 2006 when the DOD delayed deployment of OICW (Objective Infantry Combat Weapon).
Yes, he was. Gatsby was in the seventh infantry.
the infantry used: lee enfield 303, bren light machine gun, vickers machine gun, Thompson sub machine gun the sten was not yet issued to troops in Africa.
The machine gun was devastatingly effective weapon against infantry charge. It could fire 8 bullets a second or more, and each trench would have a number of machine guns. During an infantry charge it could cut down a whole bregade in minutes! the machine gun made it unevitable that any charge on an infantry trench would cost many lives!
The Gatling Gun was similar to the machine gun in that it could kill multipule people fast. The Gatling Gun was not the first machine gun, but it was the most practical up to that time. Gatling refused to sell them to the Confederate Army, and the Union Army did not want them, although a few were purchased and used. The US Army and other armies bought them after the war. Actually, the Gatling Gun had little impact in battle. Custer has been criticized for refusing a battery of Gatlings, but he did so because the guns were heavy and slow, and had to be mounted on the same carriage used by the artillery for their cannon. Thirty years later in the Russo-Japanese War, cavalry machine guns were available which could easily be packed on the back of a horse, but these came much too late for Custer. It could be said that the Gatling Gun changed warfare because it was the precursor to later machine guns.plus it was the best gun at it's time got the job done with out a problem.
