The ideal time to go to the Great Barrier Reef is from late Autumn to late Spring, which is from May to August. During these months, there is less chance of being stung by any of the many marine stingers found in the Great Barrier Reef. The weather is also better, as the days remain warm, but there is not the uncomfortable humidity of summer.

∙ 14y agoI live just a short drive from the Coral Sea and the Great Barrier Reef and must say that it is spectacular at any time, but to say which is best is impossible for me because that is a matter for ones own preference. At a certain time of the year the coral spawns and that is a spectacular sight. Daytime dives are a completely different experience from nighttime dives. There are different creatures out and about and the corals are totally differently coloured at night. I guess you should try all the different times and make up your own mind.
