Americans of African descent were caught in tyranny of enslavement on the country's first Independence Day Celebration, the "4th of July", 1776. George Washington was a slave owner. Thomas Jefferson was a slave owner. Many of the founding fathers of America were slave owners. I wasn't until 88 years after the country's first freedom day celebration, when Union General Gorden Granger landed in Galveston, Texas, on the "19th of June", 1865, to announce freedom for all slaves through the reading of General Order #3 and the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln. It took over 2 and 1/2 years for the news of freedom to travel to the last geographical vestige of enslavement in the country, southwest Texas. Juneteenth is now recognized as a state holiday or state holiday observance in 36 states, the District of Columbia and the US Congress. Together we will see Juneteenth Independence Day become a National Day of Observance, like Flag Day and Patriot Day in America.
