Actually Pragjyotishpur was the capital of ancient Kamrup or Kamarupa. However it was also known as Pragjyotishpur in most of the time. As per mythology kamdeva who was burnt alive by the Lord Siva due to his anger, he got his life again in this land with the prayer made by his wife ratidevi to lord siva. So the ladn was named as Kamarupa ( kama-kamdeva, rupa- rebirth).
