The lake was created when the brazos river was damed in the 1930's. The naming rights were given to the senator who came up with the project as part of the stimulus after the great depression. the original name was Morris sheppard dam, but the residents resented it being named after a highbrowed yale graduate. So they went with a name coined by Ike Sablosky. A local fur trader who named it possum kingdom because of the abundance of possum hides he caught in the area.
