Is the amount of rainfall in the Chihauhuan Desert dependent upon the average temperature or is the temperature dependent upon the amount of rainfall?

Temperature does affect rainfall in the Chihuahuan Desert. During the monsoon much of the rainfall comes from typical air mass thunderstorms. These storms form when there is high moisture content in the atmosphere and daytime heating causes convection that builds these storms. If the day happens to be cool, convection will be limited and these storms usually do not form.High surface humidity will frequently lower the temperature as it takes more solar energy to heat moist air than dry air.So the answer to your question is 'both.' Temperature can affect rainfall and rainfall can affect temperature. It is not unusual to have heavy thunderstorms on one day and, even if the atmosphere is heavy with moisture, the following day there is little or no activity because the higher humidity is limiting convective activity.

How much rainfall falls in the Earth each year?

The rainfall in regions varies from place to place. If it is too hot and dry, the rainfall would be scanty (20 to50cm). if a little humid then a good amount of rainfall would be expected (100 to 200cm). If too humid then a large amount of rainfall (200 to 400mm). And if a rain forest then it would be a large amount (above 400mm).

What was the highest one day rainfall in New York City?

The highest one day rainfall total in the United State was in Alvin, Texas with a total of 42 inches of rain in 24 hours*. As a personal note, I remember that storm well. I was farther up the Texas coast where we only received about 20 inches of rain in one day. I've never personally witnessed so much intense rain before or since. If it had not been for the enormous drainage channels moving all of that water back toward the Gulf of Mexico, we would have had a tremendous flood. As you might imagine, Alvin did have flooding problems. --- * http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/general/lib/lib1/nhclib/mwreviews/1979.pdf (see second column on page 978)
