The highest one day rainfall total in the United State was in Alvin, Texas with a total of 42 inches of rain in 24 hours*.
As a personal note, I remember that storm well. I was farther up the Texas coast where we only received about 20 inches of rain in one day. I've never personally witnessed so much intense rain before or since. If it had not been for the enormous drainage channels moving all of that water back toward the Gulf of Mexico, we would have had a tremendous flood.
As you might imagine, Alvin did have flooding problems.
