It happened because of the peasants displeasure with the way the government and the king worked. The king was seen as ineffective and indecisive. The root cause was the huge French National debt that Louis XVI had inherited and the cost of such things as the French support for the American Revolution which was accompanied by high taxation and an unfair tax code. A popular uprising then took place called the Storming of the Bastille.
They raided the Bastille in hope of weapons in order to defend themselves from the Kings Army, whom they though that were going to attack (the national assembly) because they knew that he didnt approve of the current situation, and he was losing power because of the French Revolution which was triggered by the National Assembly
French people, especially Parisians were very wary at the presence of the king's foreign regiments, fearing the king would send them to quell the unrest about food shortage and high prices. Upon the rumors of an imminent attack by these regiments, the Parisians, aided by members of the National Guard (a French-staffed regiment), stormed the arsenal of the Invalides, where they found guns and cannons, but no gunpowder. Word spread that they could find powder and ammunition in the Bastille fortress. They didn't storm the Bastille to set the (seven) prisoners free or to take an anti-royal stance (the king was at the time very popular), but the crowd went mad after a volley of bullets was fired from the fortress, stormed it, and killed the governor.
There really is no one thing that started the French Revolution, but the biggest reason was because King Louis XVI failed to properly manage his nation's finances. Wars and depression caused the large population of Paris and France to unseat their leaders and claim the country for themselves in the name of liberty.
The Parisian workers rose in protest over the closure of the National Workshops, which provided work and an income to the unemployed, but were seen as hotbeds of radicalism by the conservative bourgeoisie and its 'Party of Order" that was the dominant force in the French Government.
So that the Lower-Class French could be treated fairly. Also so that the monarchy could be changed because they were taking to much power.

King Louis XVI ordered troops near Versailles to dissolve the National Assembly (members of the third Estate, who took the Tennis Court Oath before and were against the privileged clergy and nobility). The Parisian people had heard this and stormed the most hated building - the imfamous prison, symbol of absolutism - and demolished it completely. They wanted to prevent the King to attack their representatives in the assembly. (14 July, 1789)

Peasants of the French Revolution were angry at Marie Antoinette because they felt she controlled Louis - the current king - and that she had too much of a say in the welfare and running of the country. She was easy to hate, after all she had been born an Austrian.

The pain makes people angry at the people who care for them because when you are angry, you focus on this one point, and, inside your heart feels like it wants to make revenge and make other people angry, too. So, when you are angry, you care much less for the people who care for you, because, you, being hurt and angry, wants to hurt other people too.
