It can form hexagonal prisms of basalt about 2feet in diameter and varying in height.

They look man made and are a wonderful sight.

No If they cool fast then they have bigger crystals because they have time to form bigger crystas and if they cool slow they dont have time so they have small crystals.

Where did an igneous rock form if the rock contains large crystals?

Usually from the slow cooling of magma with a plentiful supply of material necessary for crystal growth, and space in which to grow.

What affects the size of crystals formed from magma?

The rate at which the magma cools affects the size of the crystals that form. If it cools slowly, large crystals will form. If it cools rapidly, small crystals will form.if it takes the rock a long time to cool down the crystals will be bigger if the rock takes a short time to cool the crystals will be smaller

Will crystals be small if magma cools fast?

Yes they will

What type of crystals is formed from slow cooling?

If the magma cools down fastly the crystal size is small because the crystals do not have much time to form. If They magma slows down slowly the crystal size is big because it gives the crystals time to form! :D

What are the conditions which small and large crystals are likely to form?

Large crystals form when a rock cools from magma slowly whereas smaller crystale form when there is a slow rate of cooling

What are the size of granite crystals?

Small, because it cools slowly

Magma that cools quickly does it produce rocks that are fined grained?

Generally speaking, yes. Magma that cools quickly will produce small, "fine grained" crystals.Magma which cools slowly will generally produce rocks with larger, visible to the naked eye, crystals. This is because while magma is cooling, crystals are forming. Generally, crystal which have more time to grow will be larger. Therefore, generally, the slower magma cools, the bigger the crystals will be. The faster lava cools, the less time crystals have to grow and are thus smaller, "fine grained".

What is a type of crystal grain that forms when rock cools Slowly?

When molten rock cools slowly, it will have a lot of time to form crystals, so the crystal size will be quite big. Take granite, for example. With the naked eye, you can see the individual crystals. The grain size is quite large. The kind of mineral that forms is dependent on the composition of the magma.

Why do intrusive igneous rocks form big crystals?

When a molten magma is intruded into rocks it starts to cool slowly because it is insulated by the surrounding rocks, and the different minerals contained in the magma will crystallize out at different temperatures. Because it cools slowly it gives the crystals more time to grow large. A magma cooled quickly would have very small crystals.

What crystal large or small can help identify an igneous rock as intrusive or extrusive?

As a general rule extrusive igneous rock crystals are very small, often microscopic, as the rock cools very rapidly. Conversely intrusive magma often cools so slowly that sizeable crystals can develop.

What feature in igneous rocks is the best indication of how rapidly the magma crystallized?

The size of the crystals. Large crystals mean the magma cooled slowly, small crystals are a sign that the magma was cooled quickly.

How is an igneous rock's texture determined by the rate of cooling of magma?

yes, slowly cooling magma will crystallize (granite). If it cools quickly, the lava will have very small crystals and will contain air pockets (pumice, if it is cooled in chunks) or can even be very thin, like hair, very straight. (Pele's hair)
