Depends on what state your in. In some states the far left lane is used primarily for Emergency Vehicles and a passing lane. In California you can travel in that lane as long as you move to the right if an Emergency Vehicle comes up behind you. According to the Florida handbook, "if the road has 4 or more lanes with two-way traffic, drive in the right lanes except when overtaking or passing." Or when you're carpooling.
Overtaking and passing.
When passing.

On a 3 lane road which lane is the 3rd lane?

There is no "fast" lane - all lanes are bound by the speed limit of that road. Basic rules of the road dictate that slow traffic keep to the right, and that the lefthand lanes be used for passing (this is in countries which drive on the right - in countries which drive on the left, it would be the opposite).

When making a left turn you should turn from the lane nearest the center line or a dedicated turn lane and into?

When turning onto a road with two or more lanes you should turn into the nearest lane. If the road you are turning from has two lanes marked for turning left there will usually be broken lane lines through the turn to show the lanes you should stay in. If they are worn away the furthest lane left turns into the nearest lane and the second lane from the left turns into the second lane from the left of the road you are turning onto. Once on the new road and it is clear you can start changing lanes. Its a bad idea to change lanes during the turn as if there is an accident you could be ticketed for an unsafe lane change

What must you use when you are driving slower than other drivers on a multi-lane highway?

The far right lane. On multiple lane highways, the lanes are counted from the left to right -- the fast lane is #1. So if you are on a 4-lane drive in #4. This applies to The US and right-side drive road, left side driver cars

Which lane is the fast lane?

Generally the lane closest to the center divider. Lanes are numbered from the left most lane on the side of the road you are on. Such as number one lane, the left most lane , is generally considered the fast lane.

Is a 'two lane road' one that has two lanes in each direction?

No. That would be a 4 lane road. 2 lane road is just that 2 lanes. One in each direction.

Why does Canada drive on the right side of the road?

In Canada there is a yellow line in the middle of the road to separate the lanes. It is on your left side so drivers stay on your right to avoid collision from the cars on the other lane.

What is a multi-lane highway?

A multi-lane highway is a road with several lanes for traffic. Our motorways usually have 3 lanes which tend to be called the "slow" the "middle" and the "fast" lane, but these names are incorrect, although the slower traffic should keep to the "left" lane, whilst the other two lanes are "overtaking" lanes to enable faster vehicles to get on their way. Some highways in North America have as many as 8 lanes. Not the sort of road to be dithering as to which lane you should be in. A difference with American super highways is that drivers can pass other vehicles on the right or the left side.
