There is a good possibility that the marking is actually New Nitro. Nitro was used as part of the name of many shotguns to distinguish them as smokeless powder guns, versus the older black powder guns. One likely suspect for your husband's shotgun was Crescent Firearms. Owned and run by H&D Folsom from about 1893 to 1930, Crescent produced guns under more than 100 trade names. If you remove the forearm and the barrel, there are frequently markings on the underside of the chamber, or the flat surface of the frame covered by the barrel. Would not suggest firing ANYTHING in the gun until approved by a competent gunsmith. Ammo has changed a lot over the past 100 years, and it may not be safe with modern ammo.
