Your paint should dry to the exact color of the sample, if it does not, the color was mixed wrong.
When you apply a fresh coat of the same color paint, it goes on lighter, and darkens as it dries.
It depends on the quality of the paint. Higher quality house paints dry darker while paints made only for coverage and price tend to dry lighter.
What dries fast is not so much the paint, but the fresh plaster on which the fresco paint is applied. And as the plaster dries the paint unites with it.
A traditional way to represent men is to paint them in a darker value. A traditional way to represent women it to paint them in a lighter value.
Like everything, paint looks darker while its wet. Its a bit like fabric, hair and pretty much everything else. As it dries it keeps getting lighter. Once the room is painted and dried, the paint continues to fade because of the light bleaching the colour.
Only if it dries out.

Monochromatic colors are all the tints, tones, and shades of a particular color or hue. You typically see this on a paint sample card, for example, with lighter and darker shades of the same base color.
Latex paint weighs about eight to nine pounds per gallon. Oil base paint is slightly lighter. These weights are wet, when paint dries on a surface it will weigh considerably less.
darker colours dry fatest. Darker colours are fastest to dry because they absorb any light that fall on it. This light is essentially heat making the darker colours dry faster :)

I'm answering my own question, but other opinions welcome. According to my local paint store, a gel stain will work (but not a liquid), or also paint. I'm going in there today with my paint sample and also another cabinet that's been pickled as a sample, to see what they suggest would be better for the look I want.

Lighter colors reflect light, darker colors absorbs more light which makes the surface warmer.
Red and green makes brown. Throw in yellow or black to make it lighter or darker. :)
As with your house, if you have painted your fence a dark color you will want to strip it and sand it before you repaint the lighter color. If you do not then the darker color will likely bleed through the lighter color.
Yes. The only qualifier is that if it's a glossy paint it is always good to sand and prime. Three shades darker won't be a problem at all. Darker will always cover better than lighter. If it were three shades lighter you wanted to go, I would say prime, prime, prime. You may need to put three coats on, but if you have a good paint, two will do nicely. If anyone tells you it is possible in one coat, don't listen. There are no one coat paints, I don't care what the can says.
I'm not entirely sure but i think it is a wheel with lots of different tones of the same paint on it. i think this is so you no which paint is lighter and which is darker. by the way i just guessed this i have no idea what it is
