Pearl Harbor was part of the US. It was attacked. It defended itself by shooting back.
Pearl Harbor is in Hawaii, which at the time was a US Territory. The Navy base at Pearl is still there. The main attack was against the ships and airfields on the island and several specific locations where attacked.
The next day the United States was on war footing.

Well, Japan needed resources and we wouldn't really trade oil with them, Japanese didn't want US to join the war so they felt if they attacked then we wouldn't really fight back. Also, the Japanese felt they could beat the US. But you have to remember, there was a depression world wide and Japan needed their resources.
Japan was a German ally and Japan attacked the U.S. Navy at Pearl Harbor. Navies were a lot more important back then.

They lost nothing. The Japanese thought America was going to fight back, so they didn't claim any of the land.
The only people who knew for certain that Pearl Harbor would be attacked were in the Japanese military. On the other hand, war between Japan and the US was widely anticipated at least as far back as 1925, given American opposition to Japanese expansionism I suspect that most people anticipating a Japanese attack, however, would have expected it in the Philippines or somewhere else closer to Japan.
