Why was the roman arch important back then and now?

The arch was invented by the Etruscans. The arch then was the only known way of building a roofed structure without using beams. The arch is also capable to support heavy loads and made it easier to build large buildings and bridges. The arch is not needed much nowadays because there are other techniques to sustain heavy weights, such as the suspension bridge and the use of steel frameworks and reinforced concrete for buildings.

I am 15 years old and i have 2 herniated disks in my lower back from a fall in soccer last year. I am wondering what workouts i can do now with this problem without hurting myself further.?

Well herniated discs are quite serious and can get progressively worse if your not careful. I would stay very clear from anything that puts pressure on your back like squats, leg press, and even some things like shoulder press can press down on your lower back. At 15, you really shouldn't be training with weights more than 10Kg anyway, its best to work with your own body weight. I would imagine that exercises like the plank and push ups should strengthen your lower back but avoid sit-ups and crunches which can put unwanted stress on the back. If you don't arch your back, you could probably get away with bench press and chin ups, you could definitely do quadriceps exercises using machines but nothing that causes you to arch the back too much. If you are concerned, you should contact a physiotherapist or your doctor and they will be able to give you much better advice.

Who were the first ancient roman arch builders?

It is not known who were the Firsr Roman arch builders, they go too far back in Roman history and we do not have this information. The Romans did not invent the arch. However, they were the first to fully appreciate the advantages of the arch, the vault and the dome. The arch has a strong lad bearing capacity and provides stability. The Etruscans invented the simple barrel arch and Pergamon invented the vault (adjacent arches which are assembled side by side) which has an even greater load bearing capacity and whose structure is also suited to support large roofs. The arches and the vaults came to be used extensively for the first time. They became essential for the construction of large scale buildings, to support large roofs and to build basements. They also used the arch to build gates, aqueducts, bridges which were much longer than before and could cross much wider rivers and valleys. The Romans even managed to build a bridge across the lower Danube, which is a very wide river. If a deep valley had to be crossed, two or three piers of arches were built on top of each other to reach the desired height. The Romans invented segmental arch as they realised that an arch did not have to be a semicircle.
