No. Mahatma Gandhi and Indira Gandhi were not related. Indira Gandhi's got her surname from her husband Feroze Gandhi. In fact, it is not actually "Gandhi", it is "Gandhey" which is one of the surnames of Parsis, which later on became "Gandhi".

In fact there is ABSOLUTELY no relation with the Gandhi Surname and Mrs Indira Gandhi. Indira's maiden name was Nehru and her married surname was Khan. So if she choose to keep her maiden name , she'd have sounded like Indira Nehru . The word Gandhi came out of nowhere . Who turned to Fer oz Gandhi only because Indira was a Hindu who could not marry a Muslim and Jawarlal Nehru din not want to be disgraced in front of the government because he was a true Hindu therefore Mohandas adopted him and got the two (Fer oz And Indira) married. so Jawarlal `s image wasn't ruined in front of the government.so in the end they were related.
