I've never heard of them called galloping gloves before but I think you're talking about riding gloves. There a many different kinds of riding gloves. The purpose is to protect your hands from the leather reins on the horse's bridle. Some horses will pull on the rider's hands and can make your hands quite sore. Riding gloves also help the rider get a better grip on the reins so they don't slip out of the their fingers.
I think you mean gloves? And yes, they do. Riding gloves are specifically made to help you keep your grip on the reins. Not to mention if the horse decides to pull them out of your hands it saves you from rope/rein burn. :)
Riding gloves are very nice to wear, although you don't need them. If you have a pony/horse that pulls on the reins alot, or is diffcult to handle, and pulls you around, you might want to try and use riding gloves. There are certain types of riding gloves. I use the SSG Cross Country gloves. I do suggest trying to find one a little bit bigger than your actual hand size. If you get really tight gloves, you wouldn't be able to move your hands around. :]
The gloves with cuffs were there to help protect their hands. Cowboys worked hard with their hands, which caused leather burn. When riding horse, the gloves helped protect the hands from tearing and the burn from the straps.
The best gloves for motorcycle riding are the Men's Motorcycle Gloves from Bionic Gloves. They are comfortable, fit well, durable and are the only gloves to be designed by an orthopedic hand surgeon.
