Can you give a horse dewormer twice in a row?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The frequency for deworming horses depends on their age, their environment and their own natural resistant to parasites.

Horses under 18 months of age need to be dewormed frequently because they are more susceptible to parasites, the parasites have different life cycles and because parasites have been developing resistance to the commonly used deworming drugs. This means that in order to treat all the likely parasites infecting young horses, different dewormers need to be used at different times to effectively control infections.

Adult horses tend to be more resistant to parasites and 50% or more of adults require deworming only twice a year (spring and fall), for small strongyles, bots and tapeworms as well as less common parasites in certain situations. Other adult horses do not develop as strong an immunity and may need to be dewormed 3-4 times a year.

Some environments and management practices also help to reduce the chances of reinfection with parasites. Very hot (over 85 degrees Fahrenheit ), dry climates reduce the survival time of infective small strongyle larva in the environment. Stalls are also poor environments for parasites and horses kept in stall are less likely to be reinfected. Removing feces from paddocks/pastures at least every other day reduces the number of parasite eggs and larva in pastures, thus reducing reinfection risks. Rotating horses off of pastures for 6 months or more also reduces reinfection risks for small strongyles because infective larval stages don't survive indefinitely.

Ascarids are the exception to hot, dry environmental conditions and time significantly reducing reinfection. Ascarid eggs can survive for 10 years or more in the environment and area concern for young horses and very old horses.

Horse owners need to base deworming decisions off of the results of fecal egg counts, environmental conditions, horse age and seasonal parasite risks. It is also important to know what deworming products are effective against what parasites and what products have resistance issues in a particular area. An equine veterinarian should be consulted to assess each horse and determine an appropriate deworming regimen.

On Howrse How long does your horse need sleep for before you can wake him up?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Once you put the horse to sleep, it won't wake up until a new day starts on Howrse, or until you use and aging point to start a new day. The legnth of time between when you put him to bed and when you wake him does not matter.

Can pasture give your horse good fresh folage?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes. It is perhaps the best way to feed your horse as this is what horses evolved to eat. Often pastures provides a horse with adequate nutrients than what hay and grain can provide. It is best if the pasture has several different grasses because this adds to more diversity in tastes and nutrient-intake for your horse, as different species of grasses tend to take up nutrients differently. But, be aware that lush pasture can be detrimental to your horse's health, because of the high nutrient quality that can be equivalent to a "hot" diet if fed too much too often. This can, most commonly, lead to founder.

A horse should either be fed free-choice hay along with their grass diet, especially in the spring time when the grasses are at their growing stage, or only put out to pasture an hour or two at a time. It is best to avoid having horses graze the pasture when the grasses are at their high-growth stage, and only wait until the grasses are around 10 inches in height before you let them out. One horse should have at least 2 acres to graze on, however this really depends on where you live. You may be able to only graze one horse on 10 acres, whereas others 1 acre is quite enough.

Keep a sharp eye for signs of founder, and only let them out for short periods of time during the day, if you can. If you can't be around to put them in after a short period, have them have access to coarser forage like hay to aid in the digestion process. Also exercise them to keep them from gaining weight on such a good quality pasture.

Neither your mare nor the birth will be affected by your center not having a vet. You will just have to pay more for the birthing. Always have at least 700e in your reserve when your mare is going to give birth.

What does it mean if a horse is not broke to ride?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If someone tells you there horse is broken in, it means that their horse has been backed, which means it now accepts a saddle and rider on his back but may not have done much training so far,

Horses are usually backed around the age of 4 sometimes later, but it's best to back them at 4.

If horses ears are slanted backwarrds what does it indicates he is?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It depends on the situation the horse is in. If the horses ears are swiviling back and forth and moving around alot they are more than likely just listening to sounds, other horses or you.

If their ears are pinned back against their head and their teeth are bared (like a dog snarling) then they are upset or angry. Their tail may also swish around if they are angry. Horses pin their ears back as a warning to other horses or things they feel are a threat.

When you stand behind your horse you should do what?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Unless you are 6 feet back or at least out of leg range, you shouldn't be standing behind your horse at all. If you must stand behind your horse, always be sure that you are far enough back that if your horse spooked, it couldn't kick you. You should also let the horse know that you are behind it so that there is less chance of it spooking and hurting you. And of course, obviously, don't try to walk behind a horse that you don't know well. Without being familiar with the animal, you would have no idea what to expect from it.

If your horse looses a shoe when you are riding what should you do?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Dismount and go back.

If you are trail riding, its always handy to carry an Easyboot; then you can put it on and continue riding.

Make sure all nails, etc.. are out of the hoof.

Save the shoe if you have it for the farrier.

If you have a very tender-footed horse, and are on rocky terrain, you can try making a "wrap" around the hoof with a bandana and clothing or several layers of duct tape to minimize damage on the way back. Make sure its on tight.

How do you determine if a horse has a smooth walk?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Get on in shorts bareback. If your crotch hurts when you get off, or if you can't carry a water bottle with you because it sloshes all over, then no, your horse does not have a smooth walk.

To be more scientific about this, the slope of the shoulder blade can tell you. The steeper the slope, the less smooth it will be. Also take a look at the fetlock, the thing below the pastern and above the hoof. If those are almost straight up, it will be uncomfortable, and whereas more flat will be smoother.

How do you plant seeds on Howrse?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Well, technically you can only plant crops if you have an EC. But here is what you do if you have one:

Click on the EC tab

Click meadow

It should show the meadows that you have for the horses in the EC

You have to lay a pasture fallow, and then you can grow crops, but you have to buy fertilizer and the certain crop that you want to grow.

How far behind when walking behind a horse should you stand?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you get up fairly close you can't get kicked only shoved. Mistake folks make is standing where they believe they're just out of range but anything that weighs 1200lbs and can scratch behind it's ear with a rear hoof has fairly good aim. As long as the horse knows you are there you shouldn't have to stand away from him. Put your hand on his back as you walk around him...to the back especially so he knows where you are.

In real life, feeding a horse directly after riding can result in colic. Since colic is a very serious disorder that can result in death, feeding right after riding is not recommended. Neither is giving too much water after riding.

Why are hot horseshoes put on horses hooves?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

People put horse shoes on horses to protect their feet. This coming from a horse back rider, my pony Holly. Thanks.

A:People put horseshoes on horses because most horses are kept in stalls, and in stalls, a horse stands in ammonia from its waste, and this weakens the hooves, so people put horseshoes on their feet as a quick solution so that they dont shatter on roads or other hard ground. However, what many people don't know is that it is actually better for the horse if you do not shoe him. Horses should be left in a pasture and kept barefoot. They can be gradually introduced to hard surfaces and their feet will grow harder like the mustangs. Shoes restrict blood flow through the legs, send harmful vibrations up to the joints and several other things that sacrifices the horses health.

Should I sell my horse?

User Avatar

Asked by Kimiko4JD

On your horse's page, there will be 2 boxes right above their head. One will be to "re-name", the other to "sell." You have to be on level 2 to sell and buy horses from the aution, though.
