When it fails to pump fuel as it should.
It is highly recommended.
To replace the fuel pump on a Volvo S40, first, disconnect the battery and relieve fuel system pressure by removing the fuel pump relay and starting the engine until it stalls. Next, access the fuel pump by removing the rear seat or trunk cover to reach the fuel tank. Disconnect the electrical connector and fuel lines from the pump, then unbolt and remove the old pump. Install the new fuel pump by reversing these steps, ensuring all connections are secure before reconnecting the battery and testing the system.

Replacing the fuel pump is not a schedule maintenance item. You replace the fuel pump when it fails. However, you do need to replace the fuel filter at a regular interval. I recommend you replace the fuel filter every 50,000 miles if it is replaceable. A partially clogged fuel filter will cause the fuel pump to work very hard to pump fuel to the engine. This will cause the fuel pump to fail prematurely. So replace your fuel filter every 50,000 miles and you may never have to replace the fuel pump.
It is part of the fuel pump, in the tank. On a 14 year old vehicle, if you are removing the tank you should replace the entire pump.It is part of the fuel pump, in the tank. On a 14 year old vehicle, if you are removing the tank you should replace the entire pump.
There is no regular service interval. Simply replace if/when it should fail.
