NEVER!... there is no timing BELT on a Chevy V8 engine for Avalanche. it has a timing Chain and should not need replacement unless damaged or abused. A good certified shop mechanic can diagnose a timing chain problem.
There is a single serpentine belt for the front engine accessories - (see your manual for normal replacement cycle). easy to change yourself. the belt is not cheap! search YouTube for videos to show how.

YOU DON'T!!! I have a 2003 avalanche and I had to replace the water pump you can't replace the seals!!! It's a defect in the 2001 to 2003 avalanche the seals fail.
unless there is noise coming from the timing chain, you should never need to replace it.
You have to remove the gas tank.
The 2003 Chevy Malibu does not have a timing belt. It has a chain which should last the life of the engine.
I was told on 2008 avalanche, should be same on 2007 (not sure) to replace the whole left side valve cover. The PCV is build in in cover ?
I have a Chevy Cavelier - year 2000. My timing belt broke at 172,000 with no warning. It was a belt though, not a timing chain.
The 97 Chevy Suburban doesn't have a timing belt.
