It depends on whether or not you will be put to sleep. If you are going to stay awake, then you are fine to eat right up until the surgery. Just make sure your mouth is really clean before you go. If you will be put to sleep, you are advised to not eat for 6-8 prior. Anesthesia commonly makes people nauseous and if you have eaten recently can cause vomiting. That is no fun with open sores in your mouth.
From what I remember, I had to fast somewhere between 12-24 hours before my surgery.
