You shouldn't wean the babies. Mom will do it herself. She usually weans the babies around four weeks and then has a second litter around six weeks. If you intend to keep breeding keep dad in the cage. If not, take dad and the male babies out of the cage before the second litter comes, but leave at least one of the female babies from the first litter in with mom to help when the second litter comes and to be her companion after the babies are all re-homed. Babies can be sent off to new homes at eight weeks of age. If mom weans the babies too soon you can usually save some of them by feeding them Cheerios soaked in cat milk replacement.
You can hold them when they are at least one week. If you hold them when they are under 3 weeks, you must be VERY, VERY CAERFUL. Pick them up gently with two of your fingers on their sides and put them on your palm. Do not squeeze or shake them.
You can hold your gerbil when they open their eyes, at day 17-21.
Baby gerbils should be separated from there mothers by 5 weeks after birth.
Around 4-6 weeks. Baby gerbils should not be sold until 7 weeks
Baby gerbils should be fed by their mother, but if this isn't possible, it is best to use kitten replacement milk (purchasable at pet retail stores). Feed them at least three times a day with an eyedropper until the gerbil is around three weeks old. Then you can alternate between Cheerios or bread soaked in the milk and the eyedropper of it to wean them to real food in the next week. Gerbils should be able to start eating seeds and gerbil mixes around 4 weeks of age.
Ideally, a mother should try to wean her child from breast-feeding by the time the baby is one year old.
Gerbil pups should remain with their mothers for at least six weeks, if not eight, even though they are weaned at week four. Gerbils still have many behaviors to learn, and separating them from mom early can lead to gerbils being aggressive and untameable.
many animals especially gerbils enjoy company of their own kind and if you don't want baby gerbils the same sex keeps that from happening.
Why are we advised not to wean a baby before they are 17 weeks old?
Most pediatricians recommend that you wean your baby from a bottle around 12-18 months.
I'm not posetive, but if I were you I wouldn't, it wouldn't be very healthy.
You can wean your baby take from her bottle by sticking her nose in a dish of milk. The milk will get on her tongue and she will begin to lap.
they ill eat on there own
Baby gerbils can be sold about a week after the next litter comes, at around day 35.
Baby gerbils need their mother's milk and should not be given anything but kitten replacement milk and only if something happens to the mother.
No less than four weeks of age.
