Yes it is a bad thing for a friend or family member to say. Saying "whatever" shows you don't care about them at all.
When someone threatens suicide, you need to take them seriously. Let them know that you are going to call 911 and have them taken to the psychiatric hospital if they are serious. If they are just looking for attention, that will make them stop saying things like that. If they are serious, that will get them the help they need. Just remember that you will have to actually call 911 if they are really planning to kill themselves. Letting the experts handle things is the best way to deal with suicidal people.
