Blacks began receiving rights in 1865, but with the implementation of anti-freedmen organizations, such as the KKK (b. 1865), blacks' newfound rights were being taken away. The later "civil rights movement" was blacks fighting to gain those rights back & to receive a more equal standing in America.

The Freedman’s Bureau helped African Americans by making schools for them, giving them homes and protecting them. Another way they helped them was by sending troops there so the blacks could vote and the southerners that wanted to kill blacks were not allowed to do anything that could hurt the blacks in public.
