The New World was the first term the was used. Then, as colonies began to grow, the three sections of the territories became known as the New England Colonies; The Middle Colonies; and the Southern Colonies.
As time passed, the name America, was used to describe the colonies. Then, the United States of America, after independence was won from England, when the American Revolutionary War was over and done.
