Apartheid that means "separateness" in Afrikaans and was supported by the Afrikaaner minority National Party and instituted after the 1948 election. Their belief and goal was to keep all power in the hands of the Afrikaans minority. As descendants of Dutch settlers, the National Party identified with the Nazi ideology of Germany and felt the system not only prevented domination by the black majority but English settlers as well. Apartheid led to various segregation laws that favored forced removals form prime land, separate amenities, the formation of "townships" to provide labor and travel restrictions (amongst others).
