Technically speaking, when you cannot see the moon, it is a new moon. But my thinking is that if you can't see the moon, how can it be new? So my definition of a new moon is when you can see a smile in the sky because the moon is happy that it has just been born, but when you see a frown in the sky, the moon is sad because it is dying. Then you get the scientific "new moon."

This sentence is a metaphor comparing people to the moon. The moon rotates just enough so that only one side ever faces the Earth. The side that we cannot see is known as the dark side of the moon. This sentence is saying that like the moon, people often have a side of them that people do not see. It suggests that this side of people is dark and filled with secrets that the person does not wish others to see.
