The Massachusetts Bay colony, founded in 1628 in the area of present-day Boston, was established officially to open a trade center in the New World that could reward investors with the profit of having direct access to New World goods brought to English markets. Below the surface, however, the colony served as an opportunity for Puritans to practice their beliefs without critical or controlling interference from English authorities.
The reason is that in massachusetts( in maine) a man name Roger Williams believe that not all puritans should share the same belief. And so he was persecuted, and he established a charter to form a colony.
Actually, it wasn't a strong colony and is one reason the Duke of York could sail in and take control of it without a shot being fired. If it had been stronger he wouldn't have been able to do that.
William Penn founded Pennsylvania with a land grant that was owed his deceased Father. His goal was to create a colony that allowed for freedom of religion due to his desire to protect himself and fellow Quakers from persecution.

The classical answer is Jamestown, as being the first successful colony established by the British, the other being the colony established in Roanoke (spelling?). This colony mysteriously disappeared for no reason at all, thus the reason for the two way answer.

The gold and riches that were brought back, was the reason Spain kept pushing forward.
