It's probably the air recirculation door. When the door is closed, it circulates the air inside the car. When it's open, it allows outside air in. Even with the door closed, you will still get some outside air in.

Well, I have a new Matrix, and I find that the fresh air always comes in. The faster you travel, the more air there seems to be. I think it's normal, as a big emphasis on air quality, and probably safety for the occupants. i have a lumina. fresh air blows even when vents are off. its not normal (for my car at least). my intake flaps stuck open.
