You know a guy likes you when he pays attention to you, talks to you, calls you, is nice to you. You know he likes you when he treats you well, follows-through on things he says he'll do, gives, listens. You can tell from your gut feeling if he likes you or not. If you start liking him back and he backs off, that means he never really liked you in the first place. He just needed some ego stroking. In that case, back off as well. It's not worth trying to get his attention. Besides, it's not about you. It's about him and his ego.
